Aries
This May we’re gonna take a small look into the first fire sign of the zodiac. And by “small look” I actually mean a symbolic deep dive!
Aries is the first sign of the astrological wheel. Aries is a symbol of birth, action, courage, instinct, passion, survival, and raw life force. It’s fiery nature is the first spark that alights intense creative energy. As the first sign in the cycle, we can see this energy in motion through Aries natives themselves. They are the pinnacle of “I exist, and I will move!”
Those born under Aries are often very passionate and carry a very profound presence. They tend to be:
bold
intense
energetic
expressive
passionate
competitive
impulsive
independent
independent
INDEPENDENT
Even Aries natives that have a more muted energy, (as the sun sign is not always the final say in horoscopes) also tend to possess a similar passion that helps them explore life through movement, challenge, or self definition. Aries are often found in leadership positions because of their abundant energy, confidence, and drive. They can also be prone to action without prior thinking, rely heavily on instinct, and also their independence. They are full of ambition, and hate to wait, something that they will let you know one way or another. Aries also have innate survival instincts and tend to be a little combative. They never stop for long as they are the sign of movement.

History of Aries:
The Constellation for Aries is tied to the Myth of Jason and the Argonauts. The ram in question is Chrysmallos, the ram with the golden fleece. Chrysmallos saved both Phrixus and Helle, the children of Athamas, the founder and king of many Greek city states including Thessaly, Orchomenus and Boeotia. Athamas married the goddess Nephele and sired two children, Hele and Phrixus. Soon, the king grew enamored with Ino they daughter of Cadmus. This enraged Nephele and she left, cursing the land with drought.
Ino was ambitious and attempted to persuade Athamas to sacrafice Phrixus in order to bring an end to the drought, however just in time, Chrysmallos, the winged ram with golden fleece, arrived and saved the children. However, Hele fell from the ram in flight and drowned in the Hellespont, which is named after her.
Chrysmallos is the son of Posiedon and a nymph named Theophane. Posiden turn himself into a ram and Theophane into a ewe. Soon after, Chrysmallos was born.
As the ram landed in Colchis, thus bringing Phrixus to safety, the young boy sacrificed the ram to Posiden, who made his ram son into the constellation Aries. There’s an epic adventure that follows this story, but this is a post about Aries, not Greek myths.
Symbolism of the ram:
The ram symbolizes determination, aggression, courage, survival, and the willingness to charge ahead despite obstacles. Rams in life are often found in impossible places, like the side of a cliff. This perfectly mirrors those born under Aries as they revel in competiotion, challenges, and persistence.
While there are many great traits about Aries natives, they can also be a little brutish, irrational, overly dominant, and fearless, often to their own detriment.
Fire Element.
There are three fire signs in the zodiac and each represent a different part of the element they are associated with. for example, Leo’s fire is a radiant light, Sagittarius’s fire is lavish and expansive. Aries’ fire however, is explosive. Like the quick way a fire consumes. Because of this initial spark that Aries is blessed with, they carry qualities like adventurousness, spontaneity, great enthusiasm, and a competitive spirit. All fire signs need a form of expression to channel that energy they have. Otherwise they begin to feel stifled, burned out, reckless, and volatile.
Aries Modality:
Aries is a Cardinal modality. This means they are someone who initiates action. They begin seasons and push life forward. Other cardinal signs are Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. Aries is the first cardinal sign making it the purest initiator of the zodiac. This allows Aries to succeed in starting new projects, take leadership, prefer action over planning, and dislike stagnation. They easily become restless, especially when there is no challenge or task. They need momentum or else they go a little crazy! Aries are great at starting things, but struggle more with patience, maintenance, and restraint.
Ruling Planet: Mars
In Western Astrology Mars governs:
desire
aggression
sexuality
motivation
anger
physical energy
survival instinct
competition
drive
courage
Mars energy is direct and forceful and as it rules Aries, natives tend to possess a strong will, high ambition, quick tempers, intense passion, competitive tendencies, physical vitality, and strong sexual magnetism. When mismanaged, this enegy appears as impulsive, selfish, destructive, reckless, and addicted to conflicts.
Each sign has equal parts positive and negative.

Souls that need to be tempered in Aries’ fire before moving along to other incarnations. The Aries Shadow Journey
Every zodiac sign contains both light and shadow. This shadow is the dusk before the dawn of our souls and purposes. In the shadows, we act like beasts, in Aries this manifests as selfdestructive behaviors, violence, being emotially reactive, ruthlessness, domination, being overly competitiveness. They are seeking to return to the chaos they came from while in the shadow side of their journey. Through life lessons, experiences, and free will, we can choose to remain in the dark, or we can take the guidance of the universe and reforge our souls through concious behaviors that improve both our manner and destiny. When the light dawns on Aries and they learn to balance themselves, their passion becomes Heroism, leafership, inspiration, courageous compassion, protetive strenght, and unashamed authentitcity.
The evolved Aries becomes a protector rather than merely a fighter.
